Frequently asked questions

Do I need a call sign to get started?

No. You do not need an amateur radio call sign to take part in this project. You can join, test, and send messages as a beginner. If you later want to operate on amateur radio frequencies, that has its own rules, but the entry point here is open to everyone.

How far can a message reach?

Range depends on your surroundings. The signal travels on radio waves, so it is affected by terrain, trees, buildings, the height of your antenna, the antenna type, and whether a repeater is within reach. Two devices on a hilltop with clear line of sight can talk much farther than two devices inside a dense forest. A nearby repeater can also carry messages over a longer path.

What equipment do I need?

At a minimum: a compatible radio device, a suitable antenna and the right connector, power (a battery or wall supply), and cables. For a permanent spot you may also want an enclosure and mounting hardware. See the Build a Kit page for the building blocks.

Can this replace emergency services?

No. This is an additional way to communicate. It is a community project for learning and for staying connected when other systems are down. It is not a replacement for 911, emergency dispatch, or official emergency services. In a real emergency, always contact your local emergency services first.

Are there future plans for a BBS and mailboxes?

Yes, as a future idea. A BBS (bulletin board system) and personal mailboxes would let people leave and read messages over the mesh, like a community message board. This is a planned feature and not available yet. Current work focuses on getting reliable messaging and repeaters working first.
